Des Moines, Iowa – August 4, 2016 – Iowa Climbers’ Coalition (www.iowaclimbers.org), announces it has received a grant from REI for trail development at Picture Rocks State Park.  The Iowa Climbers’ Coalition has partnered with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Access Fund to maintain trails and climbing access at Picture Rocks state park near Monticello Iowa. This is the premier climbing destination in the state of Iowa and is home to more than 60 rock climbing routes. The ICC has been working with the Jones County DNR for the past several years to establish a climbing management plan for Pictured Rocks.  Under this plan the ICC has been maintaining existing routes. Old and worn bolts have been replaced as needed throughout the park.  Jones County has begun accepting applications for new routes at Pictured Rocks.  The first two new routes are now open on the Primal Wall!  More information is avaible on Mountain Project.

The Iowa Climber's Coalition has been working with the Jackson County Conservation board to expand the rock climbing at the Ozark Wildlife Area. With the permission of the Jackson County Conservation Board, we have open the 187 crag.  There are currently 7 open routes at this crag. There is more information available on Mountain Project.

NOTICE: There is currently a temporary closure for the north end of Indian Bluffs. This extends from Chimney Rock all the way to the Wedding Bells area. This is pending further study of the ecosystem, and the compatible use evaluation.  In general, they are worried about algific sites - sites at NE-facing rock faces that have cooler air in summer and tend to host unique plant/animal species.   Please respect this temporary closer; this is only affecting a few routes.  The ICC continues communicate with the DNR regarding the status of this closure.
